Athens Greece: Plaka and Acropolis

November 28, 2018 by hollyGS

We arrived in Athens Greece very early in the morning via a direct flight from Sofia Bulgaria. We took the Metro from the international airport into the city centre and it cost 10 euro per person for a one way trip. The entire trip took about 50 minutes. The hostel we stayed at was located in the Plaka neighbourhood, which is just below the acropolis. The walk from the metro to our hostel took about 15 minutes. It was about […]

Wandering Plovdiv pt.2

November 21, 2018 by hollyGS

Day two in Plovdiv was short but sweet. After a delicious included breakfast at our hostel, we wandered off in search of the Nebet Tepe’s Ruins. The walk took us about two minutes from our hostel. After this, we wandered around the city more, and stumbled upon more and more Roman ruins. Before heading back to the train station to purchase a train ticket and make the 2 hour journey back to Sofia. We came across a lot of incredible […]

Sofia to Plovdiv and Self Guided Walking Tour

November 13, 2018 by hollyGS

We woke up at our sketchy hostel in Sofia(maybe an understatement), and had some included breakfast before checking out and walking to the Sofia train station. Our plan for the day was to travel by train to Plovdiv and see as much as we could see. It was incredibly easy to show up at the train station and purchase train tickets on the next train travelling to Plovdiv. Something to consider is that Bulgaria uses the cyrillic alphabet, so if […]

Train Travel: Bucharest to Sofia

September 15, 2018 by hollyGS

We started the morning off by having breakfast in the square closest to our hostel, before walking to the Gara De Norde train station, which is the main train station in Bucharest.     We bought our tickets the day before to give us piece of mind. Neither train we took was very full, so this was probably not necessary, (we travelled November 13th for reference). There is one train per day that takes this route from Bucharest to […]

Sighisoara to Bucharest

September 1, 2018 by hollyGS

Our last full day in Romania was spent travelling back to Bucharest in order to catch a train to Sofia Bulgaria the following day. The journey from Sighisoara to Bucharest is incredibly straight forward. We woke up at 5am and walked from our hotel in the old town of Sighisoara to the train station (took about 30 minutes). All the lights were off in the train station, but one booth was open and selling tickets. We purchased a ticket that […]

SIGHISOARA: Transylvania, Romania

July 23, 2018 by hollyGS

Our first full day in Sighisoara was spent wandering the old walled city. We started the day off with a delicious breakfast at our hotel. Our hotel was on the main square in the old town, everything we wanted to see in Sighisoara was within easy walking distance ( about ten minutes maximum). After breakfast we walked towards the covered stairwell, and climbed up to the top of the old town where the cemetery is located. The covered bridge was […]

Brasov to Sighisoara Transylvania: By Train

July 6, 2018 by hollyGS

The train ride from Brasov to Sighisoara starting off as an interesting adventure. We tried to purchase train tickets the day before at the station in Brasov. The lady at the information desk at the rail station refused to speak to me, or make eye contact, so I was unable to even try and purchase tickets. This made me quite anxious about trying to purchase tickets the next day.  However, the next day we queued up at one of […]

Brasov, Romania: So much to See!

June 29, 2018 by hollyGS

Before we arrived in Brasov, we knew very little about what to see and do. Besides seeing the Black and White towers and ogling the Brasov Hollywood sign, there is sooooo much to see and do in Brasov Romania!     Much like other Medieval fortified cities, Brasov is surrounded by walls, towers and bastillions. Each tower and bastillion is maintained by a skilled trades guild. For example, the Black Tower would be defended by the blacksmiths of Brasov. Such […]
