The Oldest Temple in Taiwan | God of War Temple and Confucius Temple Tainan

December 14, 2020 by hollyGS

After visiting Fort Provintia near by, it was a very brief 2 minute walk to get to the oldest temple in Taiwan. The God of War Temple or Sì Diǎn Wǔ Miào 祀典武廟 was built sometime in the 1660s. This temple is dedicated to the God Szu Wu Miao. The temple complex was a series of about 10 buildings, each one with an altar and place to burn incense. The temple was gorgeously ornamented and had a lovely back garden. After this temple, […]

First Impressions of Tainan | Fort Provintia 赤嵌樓

December 6, 2020 by hollyGS

After arriving in Tainan and dropping our bags off at our awesome airbnb, we headed out on an adventure to explore Tainan, the oldest city in Taiwan!! Our first stop was at an old dutch fort, turned Qing Temple, turned Japanese Hospital, called Fort Provintia. It was 50 NTD each to enter the fort. This wasn’t a very large site and there were lots of tourists, so I felt very overwhelmed. I had quite a panic attack, which you can […]

How to Get From Kaohsiung to Tainan (Local Train Do-it-Yourself)

November 29, 2020 by hollyGS

To make the journey from Kaohsiung to Tainan, we woke up pretty early, just in case it took us a few hours to figure out the process. We checked out of our airbnb and headed to Kaohsiung main train station to buy tickets to Tainan on the local train. The ticket machine was a lot like the one we had used to get tickets to Juifen. You put your money into the machine first, then select your number of people, […]

November 8, 2020 by hollyGS

After a long day exploring Fo Guang Shan Monastery (previous post) we decided to have a bit of a more relaxed night. We decided to head to Cijin Island to have a beer and watch the sunset. To get to Cijin Island , you can take the MRT to Sizihwan station. Take exit one, and walk about 6 minutes to Banana Pier where you will find the Gushan Ferry Pier Station. You have to go inside the K2 building (the […]

Day Trip to Lotus Lake in Kaohsiung | Beautiful Lake Surrounded by Many Temples

August 30, 2020 by hollyGS

We woke up at 7am and decided to take a day trip to Lotus Lake to see all the pavilions surrounding it. We took the MRT from Formosa Boulevard to Zuoying Station (where we had arrived by THSR the day before)and walked about 20 minutes to the lake. I believe there is a bus as well, but we found walking to be lovely and lost of the walk was through a park (even a wedding set up). We arrived at […]
