Anping Treehouse | Abandoned Dutch Warehouse

January 10, 2021 by hollyGS

After we explored the Old Anping Fort/ Fort Zeelandia, it was on to the Anping Treehouse! This treehouse used to be an old dutch trading outpost/ warehouse. Around the beginning of the Japanese colonial time, the opium trade was made into a government buisness, so this warehouse went abandoned, until it was briefly made into a salt storage facility. Years of abandon have allowed the banyan trees to take over this building, making it into a treehouse! The entrance fee […]

Walking to Anping from Tainan | Old Anping Fort!

January 3, 2021 by hollyGS

I woke up at 6:00am and made us coffee with this fancy looking folding coffee filter (I’ll add a picture below). I had never seen something like it before (exploring foreign grocery stores is the best)!! We made eggs with mushroom, and fried up some toast. After our breakfast, we set out on an adventure to walk to Anping from Tainan city center. Along the way we tried to get wifi in order to figure out how to get to […]

Blue Print Cultural and Creative Park | We Accidentally Crashed a Taiwanese Wedding

December 27, 2020 by hollyGS

After Visiting Koxianga’s Shrine (the Pirate Shrine) and the Old South Gate, we walked a short 10 minute distance to an interesting are called Blue Print Cultural and Creative Park. This area used to be government housing, and has now been converted to a sort of artist’s village with shops, cafes, street art and live music. The street art in this area was incredible, so I will share some picture with you! There was also a “blue print house” which […]

This Temple Was Built For a Pirate!! Koxianga’s Shrine and Park Tainan Taiwan

December 23, 2020 by hollyGS

After visiting the oldest Temple in Taiwan, we head a bit further south towards Koxianga’s Shrine. There were two ladies with fancy photography crews taking photographs on the beautiful old bridge. We had a picnic by the pond and then wandered around the shrine (which sort of looked like the Korean style of Temple to me). The shrine has been re purposed many times, including being dedicated to the founder of Taiwan, who was once a pirate!!! You can also […]

The Oldest Temple in Taiwan | God of War Temple and Confucius Temple Tainan

December 14, 2020 by hollyGS

After visiting Fort Provintia near by, it was a very brief 2 minute walk to get to the oldest temple in Taiwan. The God of War Temple or Sì Diǎn Wǔ Miào 祀典武廟 was built sometime in the 1660s. This temple is dedicated to the God Szu Wu Miao. The temple complex was a series of about 10 buildings, each one with an altar and place to burn incense. The temple was gorgeously ornamented and had a lovely back garden. After this temple, […]

First Impressions of Tainan | Fort Provintia 赤嵌樓

December 6, 2020 by hollyGS

After arriving in Tainan and dropping our bags off at our awesome airbnb, we headed out on an adventure to explore Tainan, the oldest city in Taiwan!! Our first stop was at an old dutch fort, turned Qing Temple, turned Japanese Hospital, called Fort Provintia. It was 50 NTD each to enter the fort. This wasn’t a very large site and there were lots of tourists, so I felt very overwhelmed. I had quite a panic attack, which you can […]

How to Get From Kaohsiung to Tainan (Local Train Do-it-Yourself)

November 29, 2020 by hollyGS

To make the journey from Kaohsiung to Tainan, we woke up pretty early, just in case it took us a few hours to figure out the process. We checked out of our airbnb and headed to Kaohsiung main train station to buy tickets to Tainan on the local train. The ticket machine was a lot like the one we had used to get tickets to Juifen. You put your money into the machine first, then select your number of people, […]

Cijin Island and Star Tunnel (Gushan Ferry) 旗津島

November 8, 2020 by hollyGS

After a long day exploring Fo Guang Shan Monastery (previous post) we decided to have a bit of a more relaxed night. We decided to head to Cijin Island to have a beer and watch the sunset. To get to Cijin Island , you can take the MRT to Sizihwan station. Take exit one, and walk about 6 minutes to Banana Pier where you will find the Gushan Ferry Pier Station. You have to go inside the K2 building (the […]
