Biking in Hoi An

January 27, 2017 by hollyGS

We started the day off with our complimentary breakfast at the home stay. After breakfast we walked into town again to purchase our tickets to see the sights in the old town area. 120 000 VND per person $6CAD? gets you a ticket to enter 5 of the 21 sites in the Old Town city centre. This ticket can be purchased from a building along the waterfront, close to the Japanese covered bridge. The sites included are a mixture of […]

Hanoi and Hoi An, Vietnam

January 26, 2017 by hollyGS

Vietnam Day 4: Hoi An First thing in the morning, right after breakfast, we were picked up by a cab and went straight to the airport. Our flight had been cancelled by JetStar the night before… and so our hatred of JetStar continued.  We were unable to re schedule our flight online, so we played dumb at the airport, and were able to get on a flight that left only an hour later than our originally scheduled flight. Hopefully this […]

Hanoi, Vietnam: Hanoi Sights

January 25, 2017 by hollyGS

Vietnam Day 3: Hanoi,  Trấn Quốc Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and self guided walking tour of Hanoi sights. We decided to go on a self guided walking tour of Hanoi’s main sites starting with Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám 文廟. We walked from our hostel in the old quarter to the temple, and it took about 20 minutes. We also stopped along the way to get an irish coffee! When on vacation…! Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám […]

Caving in Halong Bay, Vietnam

January 24, 2017 by hollyGS

Vietnam Day 2: Caving in Halong Bay Our second day in Halong Bay was pretty chilly, approximately 14 degrees celsius! We bundled up and took a smaller boat to one of the islands to explore a cave there. After the cave adventure, our boat slowly made its way back to shore, signifying the end of our time in Halong. Given that the weather was so unusually cold, I would love to make a trip back to Halong bay to experience […]

VIETNAM: Kayaking Halong Bay

January 22, 2017 by hollyGS

We started the day off with complementary breakfast on the top floor of our hotel. The view from the restaurant was almost a complete 360. The breakfast was pretty good, but not overly memorable. We then grabbed our bags and headed down to reception to catch our ride to Halong Bay. I normally do not book packages through hotels, but the package we booked through our hotel in Hanoi worked out really well. We arranged ahead of our arrival […]

Hong Kong to Hanoi VIETNAM

December 31, 2016 by hollyGS

We woke up very early, and tried to find a place to eat breakfast in our neighbourhood. Most things were still closed, so we had to settle for a Mac D’s Coffee. We spent the morning wandering around the area that our hostel was in, Causeway bay. There were many places decorated for the Chinese New Year, and we enjoyed taking photos all over the area. Our flight to Hanoi Vietnam was in the early afternoon, so we kept close […]

Hong Kong : Tian Tan Buddha

December 18, 2016 by hollyGS

Hong Kong Day 大嶼山 Lantau Island and 天壇大佛 Tian Tan Buddha 南平 Nan Ping Day four, we got up very early and took the metro to Tung Chung station. We arrived about 30 minutes before the gondola service to Tian Tan began, so we waited in line. I definitely recommend getting there early. We were one of the first groups allowed onto the gondola, and it felt like we had the place to ourselves once we arrived at the top […]

Hong Kong & Macao: Chinese New Year

December 6, 2016 by hollyGS

Hong Kong Day 3: Macao and Chinese New Year We started the day off with a traditional English breakfast at a British pub/breakfast joint. Potatoes and tomatoes, eggs and toast. After breakfast we walked up to Man Mo Temple 文武廟, to see the coils of hanging incense. You are not permitted to photograph the interior of the temple, so you will have to use your imagination or visit it for yourself. The air is full of smoke and incense, and […]

Hong Kong: Temple Night Market, Victoria Peak

November 6, 2016 by hollyGS

香港 Hong Kong Day 1&2: Our first Anniversary. Temple Night Market 庙街, Star Ferry 天星小輪 and Victoria Peak 太平山. Our first anniversary only lasted about 4 hours, the time it took for our plane to fly from Toronto to the international date line. Our first day in Hong Kong was an exercise in keeping ourselves awake for 40 plus hours….. We both had to work the day before our flight. We headed to the airport in the evening for our […]
