Tokyo, Japan: Ghibli Museum

October 15, 2016 by hollyGS

Japan Day 13 (Part 1): Tsujiki Fish Market, Ghibli Museum 三鷹の森ジブリ美術館 Halloween in Tokyo. Wow! When we realized that we’d be spending Halloween in Tokyo, we did some research online, and came to the conclusion that Japan doesn’t really celebrate halloween. Man were we wrong. Somehow our search must have been outdated, but if there is one thing that Tokyo has down to a science, it is Halloween. How could a nation of cos players not love a holiday designed […]

October 2, 2016 by hollyGS

Japan Day 12: 富士山 Mount Fuji, 河口湖Kawaguchiko and the return to Tokyo 東京 We woke up really early in our Ryokan, and I walked to the curtains to draw them back and get some light into the room. There was Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji San had been right outside out window all night, but we had arrived too late and it had been to dark to see him! What a surprise, and what an amazing view from our room at […]

Travelling Hiroshima to Kawaguchiko, Japan

September 10, 2016 by hollyGS

Japan Day 10: Travelling to Kawaguchiko and Mount Fuji Day ten was a long day of travelling, made even longer when we accidentally boarded the wrong train headed west instead of east. Oops. However, now we can say we’ve been to Yamaguchi. The train ride from Hiroshima was a bit complicated, but the lady at the Yamaguchi station set up all the tickets for us and printed out a time table for us! From Hiroshima (or Yamaguchi if you mess […]

Miyajima & Hiroshima, Japan

September 10, 2016 by hollyGS

Japan Day 9: Miyajima 宮島, More deer and a Street festival. We grabbed a quick vending machine coffee and set off to the train station, heading to Miyajima Island for the day! The island is actually called Itsukushima, but is more commonly know as Miyajima or “shrine island”. We took the train on the Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station which took about half an hour. From there we caught the ferry to Miyajima. Both the train and the ferry are […]

Travelling Kyoto to Hiroshima, Japan

September 10, 2016 by hollyGS

Japan Day 8: Travelling to Hiroshima We didn’t do a lot besides train travel on our 8th day, but Hiroshima city ended up being both Jives and my self’s favourite city in Japan. Hiroshima felt both rural and metropolitan. The main mode of transportation is street car, which gives the city an old-timey feel, whilst the downtown core lined with arcades and electronic shops, makes it feel very modern. Most sites are within walking distance of one another, and after […]

Kyoto & Arashiyama, Japan

September 10, 2016 by hollyGS

Japan Day 7:Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavillion) and Arashiyama Bamboo Grove We arrived at Kiyomizu temple just as they were opening the gates. 6am was the best time we could have possibly picked, and we cannot emphasize enough how magical it is to explore the grounds without bus loads of tourists all around you! The entrance fee is 400 Yen. We walked from our hostel, but you can alternatively take the bus (if you dare) to Kiyomizu-michi bus stop, or preferably […]

Nara & Fushimi Inari, Japan

September 10, 2016 by hollyGS

Japan Day 6: Nara and Fushimi Inari Shrine We woke up and almost immediately set out in search of coffee! We stumbled upon a place that appeared to be a chain, about a block away. It was called Holly’s coffee, so naturally we had to stop. While sipping our coffee, we decided that we’d head to Nara for the day. Nara is approximately a 45 minute train ride from Kyoto on the JR Nara line (which was included on our […]

Takayama & Hida Village, Japan

June 8, 2016 by hollyGS

Japan Day 5: Hida Village and Kyoto We woke up really early in order to see Hida Village before we had to catch a train to Kyoto. We walked to Takayama train station in order to catch the bus to Hida Village. You are able to purchase tickets from a machine at the train station. The combination ticket includes the bus ride to and from Hida Village as well as the entrance fee. I cannot remember for certain, but I […]

Takayama and the Hida Express, Japan

June 8, 2016 by hollyGS

Japan Day 4: Takayama and the Hida Express On our second morning in Japan, we awoke at out Love Hotel in Shibuya and packed up. We took the metro from Shibuya to Tokyo Station where we lined up to reserve tickets on the train from Tokyo to Takayama. The trip to Takayama required a stop in Nagoya. We took the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya (which took about 2 hours) and transferred to the Hida limited express train to Takayama (which […]
