October 16, 2020 by hollyGS

To go along with the self guided walking tour of Lotus lake that I wrote about two posts previous, I wanted to create a post to collect the four videos together that we made while we were at Lotus Lake. Lotus Lake is an incredible place, and it really is a FULL day trip from Kaohsiung South Taiwan. We would highly recommend it! Below you will find, chronologically, the four videos we made of our adventures there! Thanks for watching!

September 15, 2020 by hollyGS

Liuhe Night Market 六合夜市 When I talk about “foodie destinations” I often hear people talk of Penang Malaysia, Singapore or Rome Italy, however, before we headed to Taiwan, I had never heard of Kaohsiung being mentioned as a top foodie location. I am here to tell you that Kaohsiung is your street food destination! There are more than 20 different night markets in this southern Taiwanese city, but in this post (and video above) we visit Liuhe Tourist Night Market […]

Day Trip to Lotus Lake in Kaohsiung | Beautiful Lake Surrounded by Many Temples

August 30, 2020 by hollyGS

We woke up at 7am and decided to take a day trip to Lotus Lake to see all the pavilions surrounding it. We took the MRT from Formosa Boulevard to Zuoying Station (where we had arrived by THSR the day before)and walked about 20 minutes to the lake. I believe there is a bus as well, but we found walking to be lovely and lost of the walk was through a park (even a wedding set up). We arrived at […]

High Speed Bullet Train| Jiufen to Taipei to Kaohsiung Taipei 高雄 (How to)

August 16, 2020 by hollyGS

We planned on waking up at 6:30am to explore the streets of Jiufen before the crowds arrived, but it was raining so hard. So instead we sat in bed and Jives made us coffee. We waited until 8:30am and packed up our stuff before heading down to the main building for breakfast. Breakfast was a variety of interesting dishes: cucumbers, butter melon, a fermented green veggie, tofu in soy sauce, some meat mush (that Jives had to eat), an egg, […]

Exploring Jiufen at Night | After all the Tourists have left!!

August 9, 2020 by hollyGS

After dropping off our bags at the home stay, we headed out to explore more of Jiufen (with our umbrellas in hand). We walked up hill to what I believe is called Fu Shan Gong Miao Zhong Miao Temple. From this temple you can see amazing views of the city below. We decided to go to 711 and get some snacks and drinks to enjoy on the balcony in out room. We got some onigiri and ramen and beers. We […]

Trying Stinky Tofu 臭豆腐 in Jiufen 九份 Taiwan

August 2, 2020 by hollyGS

After dropping off our bags at our home stay, we wandered around Jiufen for awhile (check in wasn’t until 3:00pm). We explored all of the beautiful lantern lined stalls, and tried the infamous stinky tofu (it was so good)! Stinky tofu is fermented tofu with cabbage, sauce and lots of chilies. The tofu is fermented in different things, depending on the establishment, but it is often fermented in greens and herbs and somtimes fish sauces. A lot of people seem […]

How to get from Taipei to Jiufen (Local Train/Bus Do it Yourself!)

July 26, 2020 by hollyGS

I woke up at 5:30am, but managed to get back to sleep until 7:30am. Take that, Jet Leg! We went down to have the complementary breakfast of toast, cheese and coffee or tea. We met a nice man from Vietnam on the way to the breakfast room. At breakfast we met a lady, who I believe was Japanese (or at least she was speaking Japanese), she liked Jives’ Ranma 1/2 t-shirt. After breakfast we headed to the 711 to get […]
