How to get from Taipei to Jiufen (Local Train/Bus Do it Yourself!)

July 26, 2020 by hollyGS

I woke up at 5:30am, but managed to get back to sleep until 7:30am. Take that, Jet Leg! We went down to have the complementary breakfast of toast, cheese and coffee or tea. We met a nice man from Vietnam on the way to the breakfast room. At breakfast we met a lady, who I believe was Japanese (or at least she was speaking Japanese), she liked Jives’ Ranma 1/2 t-shirt. After breakfast we headed to the 711 to get […]

Toronto to Taipei TAIWAN!

July 19, 2020 by hollyGS

We left our house at about 4:00am after a few hours of broken sleep. The drive to the airport took about an hour as usual. Nothing weird happened going through security (we actually didn’t get the bonus security checks like we usually do!) We had no problem printing our boarding passes OR boarding the flight!! Huzzah! After our last Air China flight experience from the end of our Japan trip, this was amazing! The flight to Vancouver was a little […]

Day trip to Arashiyama Bamboo Forest from Osaka

June 30, 2020 by hollyGS

We woke up really late for us, at 7:30am. The plan was to head to Arashiyama early, but we ended up taking the 9:30 train to Osaka station. (To Book Train Travel in Japan Click Here)From here we were supposed to take the rapid 29 minute train to Kyoto, but all the trains were running 6-10 minutes late. Finally it said that our train was next, and then it never showed up! This was really weird. Japan is certainly not […]

Why I will Never Fly Air China Again |Tokyo to Beijing to Montreal to Toronto!

June 30, 2020 by hollyGS

We woke up at 5:00 am to check out and catch the first Yamanote line to transfer to the Haneda airport monorail. This was the start of a terrible uncomfortable travel day! (To Book Train Travel in Japan Click Here) We got to the airport around 6:30 am, our flight was at 8:30am. The check in line was massive… but for some reason when we finally got to the counter we were treated extra terribly. In the time it took […]

Day Trip to Kamakura, Japan (Ancient Capital City)

June 21, 2020 by hollyGS

Jives and I decided to take the train to Kamkura from Tokyo on a day trip, while Gaby went to an art opening in Ginza for Junji Ito. We started out around 8:30am and took the Yamanote line to Tokyo Station. (To Book Train Travel in Japan Click Here) From there we transferred to the JR Yokosuku line to Yokosuka (stopping in Kamakura). The trip took about 1.5 hours. *Get off at Kamakura not Kita-Kamakura, which is the stop before* […]

Nakano Broadway |AND Odaiba’s new Gundam Robot

June 14, 2020 by hollyGS

We spent the morning in Mitaka at the Ghibli Museum (you can read in our previous post all about that!) but on the way back to Tokyo we stopped off at Nakano Broadway. (To Book Train Travel in Japan Click Here) Nakano Broadway is a crazy nerd paradise! There are four floors ,and possibly a basement of everything an otaku could dream of: manga, figurines, costumes, trains, dolls, animation cells… We spent a few hours here and then had conveyor […]

The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka Japan| How to get tickets

June 7, 2020 by hollyGS

We woke up and had coffee before heading to Mitaka for the Ghibli Museum. Mitaka is a city on the outskirts of Tokyo (to the west). You can easily access Mitaka station with your JR pass from central Tokyo. From our airbnb we took the Yamanote line to Shinjuku Station then transferred to the Chou JR line. The Chou line transects Tokyo, and you can get on it at a few stations across Tokyo. Mitaka is only a few stops […]

Ueno Park Sakura Viewing |Hoppy St., Asakusa, Akihabara, Shinjuku!

May 17, 2020 by hollyGS

We woke up and went to the Kombini to grab some food for a makeshift Hanami party at Ueno Park. We got to see the most amazing display of cherry blossoms!!!! We arrived before the big crowds, which was amazing! We walked around the big pond in Ueno Park and saw a lot of stalls set up selling festival foods. We then headed to Gotokuji to try and see the waving cat shrine. This was a bit disappointing because we […]

Nagoya to Tokyo

May 12, 2020 by hollyGS

We woke up at 8:30am and headed to the hostel cafe for a buffet breakfast of toast, egg and riceballs. It was 500 Yen but totally worth it! We checked out at 10:00am and walked to the Nagoya central station to take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Tokyo. The journey took about 1 hour and 45 minutes and was free with our JR pass (as long as you take the Hikari or Kodama trains). (To Book Train Travel in Japan Click […]
