What to Do in SAPPORO!! (Sapporo Beer Museum and Day Trip to Otaru)

February 22, 2024 by hollyGS

After regrouping in our room after our visit to Noboribetsu, we set back out towards the train station at about 5:00pm to take the metro to Sapporo station then the rapid airport train to Otaru. Otaru is an old shipping port city on the water with iconic warehouses looking out over the canal. We took the rapid train which took 33 minutes. From the train you could see the sea and the rocky winter waves. We arrived at Otaru station […]

🌋Visiting HELL VALLEY☠️Noboribetsu, Hokkaido Japan

February 18, 2024 by hollyGS

I woke up to my alarm at 5am and hopped out of bed. We headed down to the bath right away. When I arrived there were two women heading into the bath ahead of me. I chose a locker by the wall and changed. The wash station I chose had a faulty tap, so I had to move to another. After washing, I headed into the main bath and had it to myself. There was a lady in the bubble […]

The Sapporo Snow Festival DO NOT MISS THIS!

February 15, 2024 by hollyGS

After relaxing a bit in our room after dinner, we headed down to the hotel’s onsen (hot spring). The change room was super small and tricky to navigate, as were the wash stations, which were all completely full. I saw a lady with an uncovered tattoo, which I was told was taboo in Japan, and despite the 100 signs in the hotel saying “no tattoos allowed”. The main bath had a sort of green hue but was really warm and […]

First Impressions SAPPORO IN WINTER, During the Snow Festival! (Delicious Food!!!)

February 11, 2024 by hollyGS

We started our journey to Sapporo from Shin Hakodate, where we caught the JR Hokuto train to Sapporo. We got on a non-reserve car (a weird lady tried to push past us to get on the train.. She had a concealed dog and behaved really oddly the whole way to Sapporo) where we easily found seats near the front of the train. The train ride took 213 minutes, pretty long for a fast train in Japan, as it was a […]

SNOW MONKEYS in Hokkaido Northern Japan (Hakodate)

February 8, 2024 by hollyGS

We took the street car to Yunokawa-Onsen station where we walked about 15 minutes to the Hakodate botanical gardens where the snow monkeys live! The walk from the tram stop was along the river and was actually really lovely, even in the deep snow and cold. The entrance ticket to the botanical garden was 300 Yen or about $3. The monkeys were outdoors right by the entrance. There wasn’t much snow, but the monkeys looked happy in their warm natural […]

THIS IS HOKKAIDO?! Hakodate Northern Japan (Don’t Miss This City)

February 4, 2024 by hollyGS

I woke up at 5am and headed to the onsen (public hot spring) on my own as Jives slept. I had hoped to have it to myself but three ladies were there. I went outside to the outdoor bath and had that to myself for quite awhile which was so magical. I soaked for about 30 minutes with the snow falling down lightly all around me. The air was so cold, but the water was so warm, so it was […]

Arriving In Hokkaido FIRST IMPRESSIONS (taking the train from Honshu to Hokkaido)

February 1, 2024 by hollyGS

The Yamabiko to Morioka only took 12 minutes to arrive in Morioka, we had the entire train car to ourselves! We arrived in Morioka at 12:06 and found a shop to buy bento boxes. I got a salmon and rice bento and Jives got a mixed fish sushi set. We also bought local craft beers and a radler. I bought us both a Suica card (train and metro pass) at the Newstand, as we would need it to take the […]

Full of MONSTERS! Rural Town in Japan Full of Yokai!

January 28, 2024 by hollyGS

We went down to the public bath at 6am for one last soak in the onsen before check out. My bath had two ladies in there already. The view out the window was so snowy and gorgeous, with the snow capped peaks in the distance and the snow softly coming down. After a good long soak, Jives and I sat and had a coffee together in the common room before heading back to the room to pack up our stuff. […]

Iwate Northern Japan (visiting a mountain temple in Tono)

January 25, 2024 by hollyGS

After our delicious meal we walked about 30 minutes to a shrine called Fukusenji. The shrine was deserted and reminded me of Togakushi shrine in Nagano. A staircase led to a beautiful gate or tower that was painted white and bright vermilion, then led down a beautiful cedar lined pathway to a red bridge. We then walked up the hill to the layered pagoda . There were no other human footprints in the snow, just animal ones. We then walked […]
