Heading Back to Tokyo! (Shibuya on a Friday Night)

May 5, 2024 by hollyGS

We started our long travel day at Nyuto Onsen in Akita prefecture. We woke up in our super comfy futon on the tatami floors of our lovely Ryokan at 7 am. We had to quickly get dressed and head down to have a specially arranged early breakfast in the dinning area, which was just what we needed as fuel to keep us going for the long day ahead… After one of the most incredible breakfasts, (we write all about it […]

Renting a Private Onsen in Japan Nyuto Onsen Taenoyu \ Traditional Inn Experience In Snowy Japan

April 23, 2024 by hollyGS

We got up at 7:30am and drank some coffee as we got ready to check out of our Airbnb by 10am. I left our Airbnb host a note with a beer for him. He said he was always drunk after 5pm, so I left a note saying “ enjoy this beer after 5pm on us – Kuma chan” because he had called me kuma chan because of my winter toque with the double pompoms. We left at 9:45am and walked […]

IS THIS SAFE? Japanese Fire Throwing Festival in Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture

April 7, 2024 by hollyGS

At about 6pm we bundled up and headed to the waterfront (the red bridge along the river) to see the winter matsuri. Kakunodate is known for the fire element of their winter matsuri (festival). We walked to the bridge, and even from a block away we could see the warm glow of the bonfires lit along the river. We crossed partially over the bridge to get a good vantage point of the fires along the water. There was a giant […]

Day Trip to YOKOTE! Northern Japan Snow Dom Festival and Beautiful Castle Village

March 31, 2024 by hollyGS

We woke up at 7ish and I bundled up to walk to the kombini alone to get breakfast. I got onigiri, hearty veggie miso soup, coffees and I got Jives a chocolate which I wrapped up because it was valentine’s day and it is traditional in Japan for women to give homemade chocolates to men on valentines day. Clearly I couldn’t make chocolates for him while we were travelling, so this seemed like the next best thing. It is traditional […]

NO ONE VISITS Kakunodate (But you should)!!!! Old Samurai Village in Northern Japan

March 24, 2024 by hollyGS

After arriving back in Hirosaki from the ryokan in the rural mountains of Aomori, we went to the JR office at the station to get tickets to Kakunodate. The lady printed out all our tickets in Japanese, including the city names, so it was a bit difficult to figure out what tickets were for where without the internet, but we eventually figured it out. First we had to take a JR limited express to Shin-Aomori station in a non-reserve car […]

Traditional Japanese Ryokan in The Mountains (No Electricity or Internet!) Meiji Era Japanese Inn

March 17, 2024 by hollyGS

We started our long journey day to the middle of nowhere in Hirosaki, Aomori northern Japan. I woke up at 7:30 am and began packing up our stuff. I bought Jives a coffee from the vending machine, as he was having difficulty waking up. We had to check out by 10am and we barely made it. At 9:50 they were cleaning the room next door to us, as I was finally able to drag Jives out of the room to […]

Hirosaki WINTER SNOW FESTIVAL!! Absolutely Incredible!

March 10, 2024 by hollyGS

After our delicious warm ramen meal, we walked to Hirosaki station to grab our bags. We then walked for about 40 minutes with our backpacks to check into our accommodation “Dormmy Inn Hirosaki”. We went down a lovely pedestrian street for most of the walk. We had prepaid the stay, but had to pay a 300 Yen onsen tax to use the onsen (which is about $3 each).  The room was on the 9th floor, 906 (sooo close to 905 […]

Hirosaki, Aomori Japan! Beautiful Castle Town in Northern Japan

March 3, 2024 by hollyGS

We went down for our included breakfast at the hotel early in the morning. Hotel breakfast in Japan in bonkers, nothing like the horrible continental breakfasts of the west. It was a buffet style breakfast with lots of options. I was still somewhat rattled by the events in the onsen the evening before, so I didn’t eat too much. I was afraid that the lady would come down to breakfast, so I was ready to check out and get to […]

❄️THE MOST SNOW IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!❄️Aomori, Japan || Visiting the Nebuta Float Museum

February 25, 2024 by hollyGS

I woke up to my alarm at 5 am and headed to the public bath/ onsen. I had the bath completely to myself. It is nice having a soak early in the morning especially when it is so cold out (-13 C today without the wind chill). When I returned to the room, we packed up and had a coffee I made. We left the room at 6:45 and headed to the subway station. It had snowed a lot over […]
