We arrived by local ferry at Gili Air and started the walk to our accommodation “The Bambu Huts”. It took about 18 minutes to walk, and we arrived at about 1pm. A very kind man checked us in and showed us our room.

The room came with welcome fruit: dragon fruit, oranges and a brown looking fruit I thought was fake. Jives cut open the weird shelled fruit and it was hard inside like a pear but really nice with a small brown pit in the centre. We looked it up and figured out the mystery fruit was called a salak or snake skin fruit. We also were given a fresh coconut to drink. We unpacked and hung out in our cool hut for a bit. The hut had its own pool and kitchen outside, the bedroom was air conditioned and beautifully designed, yet the walls were paper thin (bamboo thin) and you could hear everything your neighbours said. The bathroom was at the back and made of concrete, again beautifully designed. They also gave us free bamboo toothbrushes and straws.

We set out on a walking adventure heading to the north of the island first. We walked around the outside road of Gili Air and worked our way clockwise towards the east of the island. There were lots of cafes and restaurants along the shore. The water looked perfect (it will be so much fun to snorkel later). We stopped and had a meal at a cafe with an octopus as the sign. Jives had a curry and I had an eggplant burrito. We both had a small beer. My “burrito” was pretty sad, just some lettuce and 3 slices of eggplant in a wrap, but it did the trick and filled me up. We found a shop to buy two beers and some salmon teriyaki chips for later and then walked back to our hut for me to deal with some issues…

We set out again right before sunset to purchase instant ramen noodles which we had for dinner in our hut with the beers we had purchased earlier. Some locals were having a BBQ and playing guitars around a fire right beside our accommodation, the music serenaded our dinner.
